Since I've gotten alot of emails on the subject of trading, and how to get shows, I wanted to post some resources. Hopefully some of you out there who have been buying boots from ebay will find this page... Ebay is bad. Don't buy boots from ebay.

High speed connections have reformed the way that trading is done. Now, most of my trades are done over the internet... no need to spend money on postage, mailers, or cd sleeves. Here are some ways that you can obtain full bootlegs by downloading.

METHODS OF DOWNLOADING BOOTS
FTP SERVERS
some people prefer to trade via ftp. Meaning you log onto their computer with an ftp client like CuteFTP or WS_FTP. You are then able to search their directories and download whatever you like. As long as you follow the rules of the server. Some servers will allow you to upload as well. It is not considered a "trade" until you have exchanged shows... :) Always offer to upload. It's just good manners.

BITTORRENT
This is a program that allows sort of a network of downloaders to leech and seed shows. It spreads the bandwidth equally among the users. Meaning if there are alot of seeders, you will get the show rather quickly, making it better than ftp servers, because you are not limited to one user's bandwidth. I've downloaded a show at 200k before. The drawback to bittorrent is that unless you have another program to work with it, you cannot cap your upload or download speeds. Also, the interface is a bit cumbursome. You also have to know where the bittorrent trackers are located to download with it. There are no search capabilities. DIRECT CONNECT
This program is my personal favorite way to download bootlegs. It's sort of like a suped up napster or kazaa... only, you log onto hubs. It's very community oriented. You can download D++ on the downloads page. Each hub has it's own rules and most bootleg hubs do not allow mp3's.

FILE FORMATS
SHN - lossless file format that cuts the size of a .wav just about in half.
APE - lossless compression for wav files
FLAC - loosless compression for wav files
MP3 - lossey compression algorithm for music files. Quality is lost.

TOOLS
DC++
this is the direct connect client you should use. It allows you to connect to more than one hub at a time. Very handy indeed.

Enables you do download and share .torrent files. You will need to download complete dir if you plan to make .torrent files.

EAC
Exact Audio Copy (EAC) is a new digital audio extraction (DAE) tool for Windows. The main difference between EAC and other audio grabbers is that EAC uses a new technology that performs DAE almost perfectly. If there are any errors that canot be corrected, EAC will report the time position the possible flaw occurred, so you can easily correct the flaw. shn decoder/encoder, mp3 decoder/encoder
The mkw Audio Compression Tool (mkwACT), created by Michael K. Weise, is a Win32 program designed to allow easy and convenient conversion of WAV audio files to and from various lossless and lossy compressed formats. Currently supported compressed formats are MKW, SHN and MP3.

SHN AMP
ShnAmpTM is a real-time Shorten playback plugin for WinAmp® created by Wayne Stielau for the etree.org community. ShnAmp supports the SHN v3 standard, and can take full advantage of seeking Shorten! It does not convert Shorten (.shn) files to WAV files!

MONKEY'S AUDIO COMPRESSOR (APE)
You will need this utitlity to encode/decode .ape files, which are also a lossless format for music. This program compresses the file size just a bit smaller than shn but isn't as widely used. Visit their official website for more info.

FLAC
Stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec. This new lossless audio codec has been in development for over a year by a team led by Josh Coalson. FLAC has been designed to have flexibility to adjust to future technology advancements, and to move beyond the shortcomings of Shorten. Go here for more info.
